Improved transport links for Sutton

Plans to improve transport links for The London Cancer Hub have gained a major boost after a consultation showed strong public support for taking the tram to Sutton.

Some 81 per cent of respondents to a Transport for London (TfL) consultation said they supported extending the London tram network into Sutton, as a vital first step to bringing the service to the Hub site itself.

The London Cancer Hub will be a global centre for cancer innovation providing state-of-the-art facilities and delivering real benefits for patients.

The results come at a critical time for the project, as the London Borough of Sutton seeks a development partner who it can work with to deliver The London Cancer Hub vision.

Improved transport links for Sutton

The Institute of Cancer Research, London, and the London Borough of Sutton are working together to deliver The London Cancer Hub, with the support of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and the Mayor of London.

The project partners have been making the case for major investment in transport infrastructure for the site – not only through the tram but also by improving train and bus services.

They have had discussions with TfL, local MPs, ministers and London Assembly members – and with the Mayor of London, who committed to exploring options for taking the tram to Sutton last year.

TfL has now released the results of a public consultation that closed in January this year on the Sutton Link project to improve transport links to Sutton – showing the views of the public on various transport options and routes.

One of the three proposed routes takes the tram down an existing train track from Wimbledon station, while two other are new on-street routes from South Wimbledon or Colliers Wood stations.

Almost 6,000 people responded to the consultation, with 86 per cent supporting the plans for a new direct and quicker transport link into Sutton.

Some 81 per cent of respondents supported delivering the project as a tram extension, with varying degrees of support for each of the individual routes.

Connecting the tram to The London Cancer Hub

Taking the tram to Sutton is a crucial first step to improving transport options to The London Cancer Hub. We are continuing to work towards ensuring that the tram route is extended all the way to the site – and the results of the consultation demonstrate public support for this.

In total, 568 respondents stressed that the tram must also serve additional destinations such as the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) and The Royal Marsden (the site of The London Cancer Hub) – making this the most common comment raised about the route.

TfL is now reviewing all the consultation feedback before making a decision on the preferred option for the Sutton Link later this year.

The London Borough of Sutton is due to appoint a development partner for The London Cancer Hub early in 2020.
